About Madi Pride Cal
Good tidings! Madi here. I'm not much of a writer but I will give a nice blurb and FAQ about some Madi Pride Cal lore and knowledge.
Who makes Madi Pride Cal?
Me! I’m the Madi in the Madi Pride Calendar! I’m a 24! year old Dominican lesbian born here in New York City. Most of my fam is from uptown, the BX and queens, and I got so sick of gay outings only being in places like Bushwick (no shade I guess) and I also get super overwhelmed when it comes to things like event planning. In response to my feelings, in result me and some oomfs made a calendar together on 2022! It got a lot of attention through Lex and Instagram, I love talking, so I decided to go thru with it again! Right now it’s just me running it, but I’ll probably rope someone trustworthy to help me. (Or you can! Hit me up~)
How do you share the MPC, Madi?
The MPC is usually a shared calendar that I make on Google calendar, and will probably be what I use this year. There will be instructions on how to add a shared GCAL on your calendar app on the newsletter. I. (I also should specify that the MPC is one calendar that gets updated, so this substack is meant to notify when it gets updated. If this becomes a monthly thing, that same link will be shared for new people)
Does Madi Pride Cal really include all boroughs? What about Jersey and Long Island?
I try my best to include all boroughs- yes even Staten Island! Sometimes, it’s hard to find events run by queer people depending on location, so to that I say - make your own! Start a meetup! Make a game club! Do something! You have more power in your hands than you think! And with that power ask me to put it on the calendar! Any person that also runs a venue or an event are encouraged to come to me so I can put it in the MPC. And to the latter question, Jersey and Long Island are not boroughs guys…. BUT I still include them because my heart is big.
You’ve mentioned accessibility info - what does that mean?
All types of events are included in the MPC, but that doesn’t mean everyone is able or willing to come to every event. For ADA accessibility info, I do the best research I can on the venues hosting these events to see what their entry access and bathroom access is like, as well as if the space has level ground. I will also try my best to note if the venues have any sort of rest stops (such as benches, seats, etc.) For events that specifically have precautions around Covid safety, that information will be displayed on the event information section. All events displayed on Madi Pride Cal will also always mention if the event is indoors, outdoors, or both. So if this is something of interest to you, be sure to always look in the event information section on every event! I will also specify the cost of each event.
Additionally, events that prioritize attendance of specific groups of marginalized people (BIPOC, trans people, etc.) specifically will be shared and come with that specification in the event information section. It is your responsibility to make the decision if that space is one that you belong in.
Will Madi Pride Cal only be a monthly thing? You should do it monthly!
I want to! But this took a lot of work last year, and that will take a lot of work and time now. It all depends on how many people want more Madi, and if I have people willing to help me out. This substack thing is kinda funny!
I have lots of thoughts and ideas for Madi Pride Cal like, “What if this was a website with filtered options?” “What if i had extra hands on deck?” etc etc. But that all depends on reach and reception! I still think I have a long way to go, and that’s okay :)
Does the MPC only feature parties?
I want to add that the MPC mainly focuses on parties, but I like variety (for the sake of my liver) so there are more toned down events featured too, like community events, picnics, and meetups. Some people are sober and some people straight up want to relax. But also…make some friends!
I also add events made for us LGBTs, but I also add events that I think queer people might like. We are vast and have so many interests, but I have a good eye for these things. I also have Instagram! DM things you want other people to go to!
What’s your favorite color?
Yellow! Think goldenrod from the Crayola crayons.
Okay I think that’s all! I’m super excited to be doing this again, and I’m glad to be back. Again feel free to send any (polite) comments, suggestions, and compliments my way. You know where to find me!
With a great amount of love,
Madi
